AI is everywhere, right? It’s popping up in all sorts of industries, from healthcare to marketing, finance to customer service. But here’s the thing—while it feels like AI is this brand new thing, it’s actually been around for over 20 years. Yup. Over two decades. So, before we jump into the whole “will AI replace me” fear spiral, let’s take a moment to see just how long AI has already been part of our daily lives.

## **AI Has Been With Us Longer Than We Think**

Think about it – every time you search for something on Google, AI is there, analyzing your search terms and predicting what you’re looking for. When you talk to Siri or Alexa, AI is right there, interpreting your words and delivering an answer. You’ve probably used facial recognition on your phone, which, you guessed it—AI is working behind the scenes. Even those “helpful” little chatbots that pop up on websites? That’s AI at work.

Now, let’s zoom out a little and look at the bigger picture of AI. What exactly is it? Well, AI is just another invention. It’s a tool designed to help us do things better, faster, or more efficiently. Sure, right now it might seem like AI is the next big thing, but historically speaking, this feeling of “Oh no, I’m about to be replaced” is nothing new.

## **Throughout History, Many Other New Inventions Have Caused Panic—Just Like AI**

Let’s take a trip back in time to when the Gutenberg press was invented. The printing press revolutionized how books were made. But guess what? There were a whole bunch of people who made their living as manuscript writers. These folks spent hours (if not days) copying down books by hand. It took over 26 years to complete one Bible according to various sources. Talk about job security!

When the press came along, suddenly there was a faster, more efficient way to create books. Manuscript writers were scared. How could they compete with this new machine that could print hundreds of books in the time it took them to copy one? Well, as you might imagine, the press did put many of those manuscript writers out of work. But—surprise, surprise—society adapted. The writers adapted too. And new industries and job opportunities were born in the wake of the press.

The same thing happened with the advent of the digital camera. Picture this: you’re a film processor shop owner and built your business around processing film and giving people physical prints of their precious memories… Along comes the digital camera – now, people don’t need film and the digital world is overtaking the need for printed pictures, and for way cheaper than you could ever offer.

It’s a scary thought, right? You’re thinking, “Is my business doomed?” Well, not necessarily. Sure, many film shops struggled, but they found ways to adapt. They evolved, and many found new ways to add value, offering services beyond just that skill.

There are hundreds of other inventions that throughout history had some industry shaking in their books. This is the evolution of business. How did train conductors feel about the invention of the airplane? How about fax machine manufacturers when email was invented? How about the companies that print check books? How did debit cards rock their world?

## **A Personal Story—My Dad and The Printing Revolution**

Speaking of a new invention… I can relate to this personally. My dad was a printer—he ran a huge printing operation in Denver. He worked with some big names, including the Denver Broncos, and his shop was full of million-dollar presses, cutting-edge equipment, and a whole team of people.

It was a complex operation, with quality control, ink testing, press maintenance, and more. My dad was good at what he did and was very successful. But then came the business copy printer, the one that allowed companies like the Broncos to print their own stuff in-house, faster, and at a fraction of the cost. Just like that, my dad’s business was no longer needed.

Now, at the time, that was devastating. But guess what? My dad didn’t just sit there and worry about his job disappearing. He *transitioned*. He *adapted*. He found new ways to leverage his skills and knowledge. Was it easy? No. But he rebounded. And he’s doing just fine now.

## **AI: Another Invention That Will Change Things, But Won’t Replace Us**

So, what does all this mean for us today? Well, it’s simple: just like the printing press, the photocopier, and other inventions before it, AI is going to change things. It’s going to make some tasks faster and more efficient, and yes, it will replace some of the more routine, repetitive roles. But here’s the thing—AI is an enabler. It’s a tool to help us do things better, not a replacement for human thought and creativity.

In my own experience, AI makes me more productive. It takes care of the time-consuming, tedious tasks, like looking things up, writing first drafts of emails, and organizing information. That means I can focus more on ideating, being creative, and thinking about how to revolutionize things like Commercient SYNC and CommercientAI.

AI frees me from the mundane so I can focus on the exciting stuff. It’s not about replacing me—it’s about giving me the space to be more effective and more innovative.

## **So, Instead of Fearing AI, Let’s Think About How It Can Help Us**

It’s easy to get caught up in the “AI will take my job” narrative, but I think it’s time we flip the script. Instead of wondering how AI will replace us, let’s start asking,

“How can AI make my job easier?”

“How can AI help me do my job better?”

“How can AI make me irreplaceable?”

AI can’t replace human creativity or human emotion. It can’t replace the spark of innovation or the ability to connect with others in a meaningful way. But what it can do is free up time for us to focus on those very things. It can handle the repetitive tasks, the research, the busywork, so we can focus on the parts of our work that truly matter.

AI isn’t the enemy. It’s the tool that allows us to think bigger, work smarter, and reach new heights. We just need to be ready to embrace it. So, what’s next? How will you use AI to enhance your creativity and productivity? The future is here, and it’s time to think forward—together, with AI by our side.

**Final thought:** Don’t fear the change. Embrace it. Be authentic, be creative, and find the future-forward opportunities with AI.
